Andrew Kerfoot is a Toronto-born commercial photographer now based in Oakville, Ontario. A Sheridan College Bachelor of Honours Photography student (graduated April 2025), he focuses on storytelling and intentional lighting within a minimalist aesthetic. Comfortable in studio and on-location environments, Andrew primarily photographs people and maintains a secondary fine art practice that informs his commercial work — the interior work that helped shape his approach remains an integral part of who he is, but his primary focus is on people and fine art. His work balances creativity and professionalism, favouring neutral, refined imagery that highlights the true essence of his subjects. He is happiest behind the camera, and that dedication to craft is why clients hire him: to capture authentic, timeless, and thoughtfully lit portraits that tell a clear visual story.

Pet portraits on location — natural light, relaxed pets
I come to you so your pet can stay in the place they know best. No flash, no sudden noises, no stress. Using available light and a calm approach, I capture authentic expressions and the small behaviours that show personality: the sleepy curl, the alert ears, the playful tilt of the head.
What to expect
Session at home or favourite outdoor spot to keep your pet comfortable
No flash; natural and ambient lighting for softer, more flattering images
Short, flexible sessions tailored to your pet’s energy and attention span
Gentle, patient handling and positive reinforcement — never forced poses
High-resolution images suitable for prints, wall art, and social media
Ideal for
Dogs, cats, small mammals, birds — and well-behaved reptiles
Pets who are anxious around strangers or in studio settings
Owners who want candid, lifestyle-style portraits rather than stiff formal shots
Preparation tips
Choose a time when your pet is typically relaxed (after a walk or play)
Bring favourite toys or treats for motivation and comfort
Keep the environment tidy but familiar; familiar scents help pets settle
For outdoor sessions, pick a calm location with soft, even light (overcast days are ideal)

Product / lifestyle photos like my thesis, the Apple Watch assignment, etc.
Overview
Style: Clean, modern lifestyle imagery with strong product focus. Emphasize real-world context — everyday surfaces, natural gestures, and subtle motion — while keeping composition controlled and refined.
Mood: Neutral, confident, slightly aspirational. Use balanced lighting that feels natural but flattering: soft key light, gentle fill, and sculpting rim or backlight where needed to separate subject from background.
Subjects: Wearable tech (Apple Watch), small electronics, food/product pairings, and interior/architectural elements. Include hands in-frame frequently to convey scale, interaction and usability.
Shooting approach
Camera & lenses: Full-frame or APS-C body. Prime lenses (35mm, 50mm, 85mm) for environmental and portrait-style frames; 90–105mm macro or short tele for tight product details. Use 24–70mm for flexibility during lifestyle runs.
Aperture: f/2.8–f/5.6 for lifestyle frames (more context and depth). f/5.6–f11 for crisp product detail where full sharpness is required.
Shutter & ISO: Keep shutter fast enough to freeze slight hand motion (1/125s or faster). Use ISO as low as possible while maintaining clean output; modern sensors up to ISO 1600 can be acceptable for lifestyle grain.
White balance: Neutral / slightly warm to keep skin tones healthy. Calibrate to ambient light and keep consistency across the series.
Lighting
Natural light: Big windows with diffusion (sheer curtains, scrims). Position subject to use directional soft light for modelling. Reflectors or fill cards on shadow side to retain detail.
Strobe: Single softbox as key, with a reflector or weaker fill flash. Add a small grid or rim light to highlight metallic edges (watch casing, screen bezels). For food, use a strip softbox to emphasize texture.
Modifiers: Softboxes, 1/2 and full CTO gels for tungsten balance, reflectors, flags to control spill, and a small snoot/grid for pinpoint specular highlights on product surfaces.
Composition & styling
Negative space: Use deliberate negative space for editorial or ad copy placement. Keep backgrounds simple — neutral walls, wood surfaces, textured fabrics.
Hands and interaction: Shoot sequences showing the product being worn, touched, tapped, or adjusted. Capture candid gestures; shoot at eye level and slightly above wrist level for watches.
Props: Realistic and minimal. Everyday items (coffee cup, notebook, plant, wired earbuds) to suggest use-case without clutter. Use colour accents that complement but don’t overpower the product.
Surfaces & textures: Matte surfaces minimize reflections for screens; polished surfaces can be used deliberately to add luxury. Use glass/acrylic stands for floating effects when needed.
Watch-specific guidance (Apple Watch style)
Fit & strap: Show multiple strap options and how the watch sits on the wrist in different postures (typing, checking time, scrolling notifications). Emphasize comfort and lifestyle fit.
Screen & reflections: Use polariser to control glare on the watch face. Capture clean active-screen shots for UI legibility — shoot straight-on or at a slight angle to minimise distortion.
Macro detail: Capture crown, lugs, strap texture and buckle details at close distances; pay attention to stitching and material grain.
Motion & UI: Capture short sequences of hand movement with the watch interacting with the interface; use high shutter speeds to freeze taps or 1/125–1/250s for natural motion.
Post-processing
Colour grading: Neutral, true-to-product colours. Slight contrast boost and microscopic clarity enhancements to bring out texture. Avoid heavy, stylised LUTs that misrepresent product colour.
Skin & hand retouching: Keep hands realistic — minor blemish removal and skin texture preservation. Ensure retouching preserves pores and natural tone.
Composite considerations: For UI inserts, shoot blank screen exposures for clean replacement. Ensure perspective and grain match between screen replacement and main image.
Output: Deliver high-resolution TIFFs/JPEGs for retouch; export medium-res JPEGs for web with 72–150 ppi depending on use.
Shot list examples
Hero wearable: Three-quarter cropped frame of wrist and torso, watch visible, subject holding a coffee cup. Natural window light, shallow depth.
Product detail: Tight frame of crown and strap buckle, high resolution, neutral background, directional side light.
Interaction sequence: Triptych — wrist checking time, tapping a notification, scrolling an app. Consistent framing and lighting.
Lifestyle context: Subject at a table with laptop, watch visible while typing; wider environmental context showing living space.
Food + tech pairing: Watch on wrist
